Domingo García Criado
Pedrana Travajadora / Hardworking Woman of San Pedro la Laguna

Oil on canvas - 25 x 20 in.

By the light of one small flame, this mother is working on into the night, alone with her children. She has wound red yarn onto a telar, which now spins around and around, feeding out yarn as she winds it onto a shuttle. Her son is spinning a top, and her daughter seems entranced by flowers and moths that glow in the mysterious moonlight. Everyone seems alone with their thoughts.

In the background, the moon reveals a tree heavy with fruit. The moon goddess, Ixchel, is the patron of weavers.

The husband and father of this family may have emigrated to Mexico or the United States to find work.
