The women of an extended family are preparing chickens and turkeys for a big party, possibly a three-day wedding fiesta. They are dressed in the traje, or traditional costume, of different villages near the highland Maya town of Sololá. Clockwise, from the far left, the women's blouses represent Cobán, San Pedro la Laguna, San Juan Comalapa, Chimaltenango, and San Pedro la Laguna once again.

All the women are working, and the men are eating or relaxing. The men have cut the firewood, and outdoors they have probably prepared a palm-frond bower for protection from the sun.
