The Kidnapping
Oil on canvas - 24 x 32 in.
2007
A woman is being abducted by three men, while members of the family and community are worried and upset. In front of the people there is a small bundle of clothing, sandals, a bundled backstrap loom, and a child-sized shirt. This may indicate a form of elopement, in a case when the families do not approve of the marriage. One woman, possibly the grandmother, holds a stick which might be used to beat the couple for transgressing the community's norms. The other grandmother holds candles, to indicate that the pair will then be brought to the church for a proper wedding.
